Well, it's hard to believe, but summer break is officially over. I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer.
Welcome to my class and blog; I am Mr. Holman. This year, in 10th Literature/Composition, we will be reading some great texts that I hope you enjoy as much as I do. We will also be writing quite a bit (the "composition" part of the course title). I enjoy writing creatively and so I hope to afford you many opportunities to do so.
I have a few guidelines by which I run my class. They are simple, but they encompass many elements:
1. Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity. I promise to do the same.
2. Be in your assigned seat and working when the tardy bell rings.
3. Bring all of your supplies to every class period and take them with you when you leave.
4. Be a good human.
Following these guidelines will result in a stress-free environment, a pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere, and a smiling teacher.
Following is a list of the required supplies:
-A black or blue pen and a pencil with an eraser
-6 highlighters, each a different color (yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, purple)
-A composition notebook - not a spiral notebook (this is your journal - decorate it as you wish)
-A 3-ring binder with pockets and four dividers
-Loose leaf paper (college ruled, 8 1/2" x 11")
-The parallel novel we are currently reading and discussing
10th Lit is divided into six thematic units: three in the Fall and three in the Spring. This semester's thematic units will be:
These are the 4 novels you need to obtain for this semester:
-Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian
-Gothic Novel Choice (Click here for the list)
-Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
-V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd (Though I recommend having the actual graphic novel in hand, this is available on Youtube or readcomics.io)
I recommend purchasing all four books at once, but if you can't find them all at once, the first one on the list should be purchased first since it pairs with our first unit. Students will annotate these books and I will be checking the annotation. Everyone must have the books. Everyone must read the books. The only excuse for not having the books is financial difficulty; if that is the case, see me privately and I may have extra copies in the English department.
If you would like to download a copy of the syllabus, it is available under resources. I look forward to meeting everyone and getting to know you individually. It's going to be a great semester.
