Greetings, students!
First, please read Cobb County’s letter sent out yesterday regarding their new grading policy. The policy states that the grade that is in Synergy now is the grade you could end with, even if you did nothing else for the rest of the semester. The policy states you cannot earn a grade lower than that; it can only go up. Any grade I enter going forward must raise your grade or else I don’t enter it.
What does that mean for your class? You will be able to decide what you are going to focus on with the remaining weeks of school. I will do everything in my power to help students with remediation for their grades to get them to where they can reasonably hope, if their grade is not what they want it to be from 3/13. If your grade is where you want it to be, then you may decide with your parents if you continue to participate in the class. You will not receive a zero for any assignment you miss or have missed if that zero was not input by 3/13. You can even cherry pick assignments that may bring you to a grade that you want (for example, you have an 88 and so you turn in two more assignments that get you to a 90; then you can decide to turn in nothing else for the rest of the semester). This means that research papers (which I did not put in Synergy by 3/13) will not be input into the grade book unless you ask me to grade it and put it in. So if you think that you did a great job on it and that grade might bump you up to the next grade, then send me a message and I will grade it and put it in Synergy (if it helps your grade; if it does not help your grade, I don’t put it in).
With all this being said, I will continue to provide content for students through my blog through to the end of the semester. By continuing to submit these assignments, you could bring your grade up to a place you want it to be. Once you get it there, you may decide how many more assignments you will complete for me. There will be no EOC Milestone Test nor a Final Exam. On the Monday following Spring Break, I will hold a review Zoom call for students who wish to review the study guide for Romeo and Juliet. Then on Tuesday, those students who wish to take the test may take the test and turn in the Study Guide for a Summative and Daily grade, respectively. On Wednesday following the break, we will begin reading The Glass Menagerie. After that, we will have a Poetry Unit and then a Mythology Unit. Finding Nouf is the final parallel novel that you may choose to read and be tested on, if you wish.
Please don’t isolate yourself any more than we already are. Even if you have a 98 now and are not worrying about completing work for the class, I would still love to see your smiling face on the Zoom calls or YouTube comments. If any of you want to talk or reach out to me, please do. We can have a Zoom conversation or just talk through texting via Remind.
If you are not going to complete any more ELA assignments, read a book or three that you are interested in so that your reading comprehension and skill level does not decrease. I miss you all terribly and look forward to seeing you all next year. Enjoy your Spring Break staycations!
