Well, it's hard to believe, but summer break is officially over. I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer.
To the students who are in the Globalization Academy, welcome. This is an opportunity to expand your world view while following a rigorous curriculum that incorporates English, Social Studies, and Foreign Language. I am Mr. Holman, the Globalization Academy Coordinator and your Lit teacher. We will be reading some great texts that I hope you enjoy as much as I do. We will also be writing quite a bit (the "composition" part of the course title) while looking at current events around the world. I enjoy writing creatively and so I hope to afford you many opportunities to do so.
I have a few guidelines by which I run my class. They are simple, but they encompass many elements:
1. Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity. I promise to do the same.
2. Be in your assigned seat and working when the tardy bell rings.
3. Bring all of your supplies to every class period and take them with you when you leave.
4. Be a good human.
Following these guidelines will result in a stress-free environment, a pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere, and a smiling teacher.
Following is a list of the required supplies you need for guideline 3:
-A black or blue pen and a pencil with an eraser
-6 highlighters, each a different color (yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, purple)
-A composition notebook - not a spiral notebook (this is your journal - decorate it as you wish)
-A 3-ring binder with pockets
-Loose leaf paper (college ruled, 8 1/2" x 11")
-Springboard textbook
-The parallel novel we are currently reading and discussing
Through Pope High School's Honors and AP programs, you will read at least four novels each semester. These are the 4 novels you need to obtain for this semester:
-Big Fish, by Daniel Wallace
-A Separate Peace, by John Knowles
-Night, by Elie Wiesel
-Maus, by Art Spiegelman (Graphic Novel)
I recommend purchasing all four books at once. Students will annotate these books and I will be checking the annotation. Everyone must have the books. Everyone must read the books. The only excuse for not having the books is financial difficulty; if that is the case, see me privately and I may have an extra copy in the English department.
If you would like to download a copy of the syllabus, it is available under 9th - Resources. I look forward to meeting everyone and getting to know you individually. Be ready to work on day one as we will be diving right into a literary discussion of one of your summer readings, Anthem. The test over Anthem is Tuesday.
