Well, it's hard to believe, but summer break is officially over. I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer.
We will be reading some great texts that I hope you enjoy as much as I do. We will also be writing quite a bit (the "composition" part of the course title) while looking at current events around the world. I enjoy writing creatively and so I hope to afford you many opportunities to do so.
I have a few guidelines by which I run my class. They are simple, but they encompass many elements:
1. Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity. I promise to do the same.
2. Be in your assigned seat and working when the tardy bell rings.
3. Bring all of your supplies to every class period and take them with you when you leave.
4. Be a good human.
Following these guidelines will result in a stress-free environment, a pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere, and a smiling teacher.
Following is a list of the required supplies you need:
-A black or blue pen and a pencil with an eraser
-6 highlighters, each a different color (yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, purple)
-A composition notebook - not a spiral notebook (this is your journal - decorate it as you wish)
-A 3-ring binder with pockets and 4 dividers
-Loose leaf paper (college ruled, 8 1/2" x 11")
-Springboard textbook
-The parallel novel we are currently reading and discussing
Through Pope High School's Honors programs, you will read at least four novels each semester. These are the 4 novels you need to obtain for this semester:
-Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
-Select from a list of award-winning authors (More info TBA)
-Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom
-Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi (Graphic Novel)
Students will annotate these books and I will be checking the annotation. Everyone must have the books. Everyone must read the books. The only excuse for not having the books is financial difficulty; if that is the case, see me privately and I may have an extra copy in the English department.
If you would like to download a copy of the syllabus, it is available under 9th - Resources. I will distribute paper copies on Monday.
The Summer reading assignment for Big Fish is due Monday. This should include character descriptions (major characters, not every townsperson in Spectre) and chapter summaries. The One-pager you were assigned for the other summer reading novel is due Wednesday.
My blog will be updated every Monday with the activities and focus for the week, day-by-day. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at [email protected].
